چکیده

We present Spitzer 24μm imaging of 1.5 < z < 2.5 Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) in the 10×10 Extended Hubble Deep Field South of the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile. We detect 65% of the DRGs with KAB < 23.2 mag at S24μm & 40μJy, and conclude that the bulk of the DRG population are dusty active galaxies. A mid-infrared (MIR) color analysis with IRAC data suggests that the MIR fluxes are not dominated by buried AGN, and we interpret the high detection rate as evidence for a high average star formation rate of < SFR > = 130±30 M⊙yr. From this, we infer that DRGs are important contributors to the cosmic star formation rate density at z ∼ 2, at a level of ∼ 0.02 M⊙yrMpc to our completeness limit of KAB = 22.9 mag. Studying Distant Infrared–Luminous Galaxies with Spitzer and Hubble

New surveys with the Spitzer space telescope identify distant star–forming and active galaxies by their strong emission at far–infrared wavelengths, which provides strong constraints on these galaxies’ bolometric energy. Using early results from Spitzer surveys at 24 μm, we argue that the faint sources correspond to the existence of a population of infrared–luminous galaxies at z & 1 that are n...

Irac Mid-infrared Imaging of the Hubble Deep Field South: Star Formation Histories and Stellar Masses of Red Galaxies

We present deep 3.6 − 8μm imaging of the Hubble Deep Field South with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We study Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) at z > 2 selected by Js − Ks > 2.3 and compare them to a sample of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z = 2 − 3. The observed UV-to-8μm spectral energy distributions are fit with stellar population models to constrain star formation histories and derive ste...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Young Red Spheroidal Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Fields: Evidence for a Truncated Imf below 2m⊙ and a Constant Space Density To

The optical-IR images of the Northern and Southern Hubble Deep Fields are used to measure the spectral and density evolution of early-type galaxies. The mean optical SED is found to evolve passively towards a mid F-star dominated spectrum by z∼2. We demonstrate with realistic simulations that hotter ellipticals would be readily visible if evolution progressed blueward and brightward at z>2, fol...

An Alma Survey of Sub-millimeter Galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South: Sub-millimeter Properties of Color-selected Galaxies

We study the sub-mm properties of color–selected galaxies via a stacking analysis applied for the first time to interferometric data at sub-mm wavelengths. We base our study on 344 GHz ALMA continuum observations of ∼ 20–wide fields centered on 86 sub-mm sources detected in the LABOCA Extended Chandra Deep Field South Sub-mm Survey (LESS). We select various classes of galaxies (K-selected, star...
